Emerging Issues Regarding Non-Native Species for Aquaculture

چکیده

ronmental issues. Despite oversight by U.S. federal and state regulatory agencies and despite sustainability efforts within the aquaculture industry, advocacy groups and the public are concerned about the effects of aquaculture on the environment. Specific concerns include the effects of effluents and nutrient-loading; water, land and energy use; feed composition; drugs and chemicals; and food safety. These issues challenge the growth and sustainability of aquaculture. One of the greatest concerns has to do with the potential for non-native species, genes and pathogens to escape from culture systems and enter the environment. Four of the main emerging topics related to non-native species in aquaculture are: ■ the culture of new species, ■ introduced pathogens and parasites, ■ genetic alterations of native stocks, and ■ genetically modified organisms (GMOs). These topics are not all negative. For example, new species and GMOs may someday increase food supplies and improve the economics of U.S. aquaculture. Unless they are properly managed, however, these issues could cause economic losses to disease or lead to more restrictive regulations. It is important for the U.S. aquaculture industry and those who support and regulate aquaculture to understand these issues, address the environmental concerns, and participate in the process of defining and managing risks.

The role of allochthonous (non-native) fish species in Serbian aquaculture Uloga alohtonih (introdukovanih) ribljih vrsta u akvakulturi Srbije

Fish farming is the only type of aquaculture in Serbia. Fish farming is mostly carried out in cyprinid and salmonid (trout) fishponds (over 95% of the total fish produced), with considerably lower ichthyoproduction being practiced in cages and some bodies of open water such as reservoirs and channels. Serbian aquaculture currently includes 12 fish species, 4 of which are allochthonous (non-nati...

A fully illustrated web-based guide to distinguish native and introduced polychaetes of Australia

Introduction of non-native species threatens local marine biodiversity, generating substantial costs for the aquaculture and tourism industries when native (including commercial) species are displaced. It is important that non-indigenous species are identified and controlled before they establish locally becoming invasive pests. The important vectors contributing to human-related dispersal of m...

Context-dependent impacts of a non-native ecosystem engineer, the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas.

The introduction of non-native species represents unprecedented large-scale experiments that allow us to examine ecological systems in ways that would otherwise not be possible. Invasion by novel ecological types into a community can press a system beyond the bounds normally seen and can reveal community interactions, local drivers and limits within systems that are otherwise hidden by coevolut...

A brief overview of known introductions of non-native marine and coastal species into China

Non-native marine species have attracted a great deal of attention due to wide distribution and potential harmful impacts on ecosystems and economies. However, relatively little information exists about non-native marine species in China. This study provides an inventory of non-native marine and coastal species (213 species) reported to date in China (including the Bohai Sea, the Yellow Sea, th...

On the occurrence of three non-native cichlid species including the first record of a feral population of Pelmatolapia (Tilapia) mariae (Boulenger, 1899) in Europe

Thermally influenced freshwater systems provide suitable conditions for non-native species of tropical and subtropical origin to survive and form proliferating populations beyond their native ranges. In Germany, non-native convict cichlids (Amatitlania nigrofasciata) and tilapia (Oreochromis sp.) have established populations in the Gillbach, a small stream that receives warm water discharge fro...
